The swift breeze blew a small layer of dust up the road as the early morning light crept through the window to a large barn, a faint rumbling could be heard down the road signalling the arrival of a truck.
Nisha walked calmly out of the tack room, having just put away her horse’s saddles and bridles, she stopped outside stall no. 4, a shiny new plaque just having been placed on the door, ‘Kelly’ was the name engraved into its hard surface. She looked about the stall, everything seemed in order, fresh water, hay and some feed sitting in the feed bin, awaiting its devourers arrival, she walked in and over to the window large enough for the horse to fit its head out easily, she rolled it open letting the sun full the Stall, a small smile crossed her face as she looked out at the vast farmland around her “ahhhh” was the slight muffle that escaped her mouth as she leaned on the window frame, she loved the country, the sights, the smells, the animals, what could be better? as the sound of the truck got closer a loud bark could be heard from the barn door way, ‘they’re here’ she thought to herself as she quickly turned and left Kelly’s stall only to turn into the one next door, stall no.3 the plaque read ‘Blackgold’, she quickly crossed the cosy stall opening the window before returning to the ally way, she collected the two halters and lead ropes hanging from a hook on the end of each horses stall, new ones she had just brought for her horses, a little treat for having travelled so far.
She quickly walked to the barn door as the large horse truck pulled up, a huge smile plastered on her face, she had missed her friends and couldn’t wait to get them unloaded and into their new home, one she knew they would love.
She patted the large Rottweiler sitting at the entrance to the barn signalling that everything was okay as the dog had began to growl at the driver as he climbed down from the truck, “it’s alright boy it’s just Mark” she said in a soft tone, as she stood up to greet the driver, “he’s still not use to me” said Mark a tall tanned man, he was one of Nisha’s best friends, “that’s because you hardly ever came over” she replied a cheeky grin on her face “so how are my babies?” she asked him, “they were really good, Jhon gave then a good wash and feed before they left” he replied as he walked to the back of the truck, pressed a bottom to lower the back door of the truck, Nisha moved up the ramp as soon as it was down, soft knickers greeting her as she approached the two horses, one a large chestnut and the other a Beautiful Black mare, she moved over to Kelly the chestnut, removing his old halter and placing a new teal coloured one on, he rubbed his head against her hand while she worked trying to get a scratch.
Nisha smiled at the cheeky Gelding, he never changed and that was what she liked about him. She lead him out and down the ramp then handed him over to Mark, before returning for Blackgold, she nickered eagerly as Nisha approached unable to wait to get off the truck.
She removed her old halter and put her new navy one on, then lead her calmly down the ramp, once off the truck Blackgold nuzzled Nisha’s shoulder affectionately, Nisha turned and rubbed her forehead, “I missed you to girl” she said in a soft tone, “come on missy” Mark called from inside the barn “I’ve gota schedule to keep”, Nisha smiled before moving into the barn, Mark was a truck driver, driving a range of trucks. She led Blackgold into her stall, who immediately smelt the food and headed for it.
“Far out do they ever get full” said Mark as he appeared at the door to Blackgold stall, “nope not these two” she replied removing Blackgold halter, and exiting the stall.
“So how is Jhon?” Nisha asked she hadn’t seen him in a week and a half, although they talked on the phone every day, she still wanted to know from someone who had seen him, “he’s good, doing really well in his course, he will be a trucky like me before you know it” he said ruffling her hair up “thanks man” she said pulling away, then tried to fix her hair, he laughed and walked back towards the truck, “I’ll see you soon, Jhon’s got a week holiday in a month so we will be up then” he said turning for a goodbye hug before he left, “That would be great, Bring Nicole and I can give you all the grand tour” she said giving him a hug bear hug, “see yah missy, take care of yourself” he said as he climbed into the truck and started it up “wilco” she replied “remember, there is always time for a fight with a cow!” Mark laughed and pulled out, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake.
